Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number ROM Description

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a top-down shooter developed by Dennaton Games and Abstraction Games.

Gameplay

So what’s it like to play? Control-wise, it’s a pretty basic experience that allows you to attack, finish enemies, roll, or pick up dropped items. You can move the camera to observe the next room, lock onto enemies, and you’ll need to make sure you don’t run out of ammo, too.

The general play is fast-paced and challenging, with death coming with one good shot from your foes. It’s the kind of game you can restart ten times in a minute as you quickly run through the level, trying to kill off the enemies before they kill you. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be dashing around the tight environments using melee weapons until you find a firearm, then rinse it of bullets and hope you don’t get blindsided.

Enter a level, kill everyone, then leave, but it’s definitely not as easy as that sounds, trust me. This is properly difficult. It will make you go slightly lolly after a while because it’s fast, it’s brutal, and it’s very, very addictive. But I also would say it doesn’t necessarily feel notably different or new compared to its predecessor.

Visuals and Audio

Visually, it’s a bright and colorful affair, as if you’re on some hallucinogenic acid trip. The music is a wonderful collection of hypnotic tracks with this kind of trance-like quality as you lose yourself in the fast-paced and addictive loop.

Good and Bad Points

Okay, good and bad points. What’s good? The gameplay loop is fast, addictive, and intense. The musical score is wonderful. Its art style, sense of humor, and quirkiness are standouts. And progression is very satisfying.

Bad points – I’d say gameplay-wise, it is remarkably similar to the first game, and it doesn’t add many new elements. It can also be quite frustrating in terms of the amount of repetition and lack of mission variety.

Verdict

So what’s the verdict? Hotline Miami 2 is a wonderful indie game that creates a tense and enjoyable loop that will keep you coming back for more. It may be tough, but on the whole, I really enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed its predecessor. But again, it isn’t particularly fresh or new if you’ve played the first game. But again, if it’s not broken, then don’t fix it. The first one I really liked, this one I really liked. It didn’t feel like a different game; it felt more like a sort of expansion.
